In reality, the amount of times you are able to physically check your website is very small. There is a good chance your site has been down, you just never knew it. The internet is a global presence, spanning everytime zone across the globe. When you are sleeping, internet surfers from all over the world may be trying to access your website, these may be potential customers. If they find your site is down, they will quickly move on to your competition and you may never know. Your webhost may tell you they have 99.9% uptime, but how do you really know? Most web hosts will not inform you if your site has gone down, they will simply get your site back online and assume if you didn't know, then it wasn't really down. You have detailed log file data showing the exact times your site was down to show them. Believe me I've had to do this in order to get the attention of the tech support team.
